Chicago DUI lawyer says Illinois driver's license fees triple next week

There is just a little bit of time left before Illinois driver's license fees will triple next week. It's the first increase in fees in over twenty years but during these economic times that''s a significant increase.

Drivers will have to pay $30 to get or renew a license, up from $10.

The increase -- the first for a standard Illinois license since 1983 -- takes effect online Monday and, because that's Columbus Day, not until Tuesday at driver's license facilities.

Drivers whose licenses expire anytime in the next 12 months can renew this week for $10.

Licenses have to be renewed every four years.

On Jan. 1, several other driving-related fees will go up. The cost of the annual registration sticker that goes on license plates will jump from $79 now to $99. Duplicate or corrected vehicle titles will go up from $65 now to $95. And a registration transfer will jump to $25, up from $15.

You may wish to get a jump start at the local DMV first thing. If you received a safe driver notification in the mail you should definitely renew online. Locations will be closed to observe Columbus Day, but you need to check what date the facility will observe the holiday.
